Common Dog Skin Problems – Allergies and Itching
Does your dog scratch often, if so, they could be suffering from a skin problem. It may be an allergy, dermatitis, fleas or dry, itchy skin. Is their hair falling off in clumps in some areas of their body?
Other than frequent scratching and the usual dog hair loss, there are a few other signs that you can look out for to see whether your pet needs special dog skin care for their annoying issues.
Other signs are open wounds, numerous visible flea bites, skin redness and inflammation. As soon as you see any of these signs, you should have your pooch treated right away before the problem gets any worse.
Hot Spots
When a dog suffers a cut or skin irritation, the surrounding area may become moist and extremely sore.
These areas are called hot spots. Sometimes the hot spot can become too moist, and the dog may begin to scratch at it because of the itchiness. The combination of all these elements can lead to bacterial growth, which in turn will cause infection to develop. All these can be avoided by treating the cut as soon as you see it.
Dog skin problems may also be caused by ringworm. This is indicated by round bald patches on the dog’s fur. Ringworm can be contagious and may be passed on to other dogs and even to humans, which is why it should be treated as soon as possible. Your veterinarian may prescribe either an anti-ringworm shampoo or oral medication, or a combination of the two.
Dog Allergies
Allergic reactions are also possible causes of dog skin problems. Food, changes in weather and flea bites are some of the frequent triggers of allergic reactions in dogs, although there may be others that are quite harder to detect.
Unfortunately, there is no real cure for skin allergies in dogs. All you can do is give them antihistamines that will relieve the itch and irritation. Antihistamines for dogs are available in the form of sprays and ointments, which you can buy from your veterinarian or from any pet supplies store.
